16The game is loosely based on the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, with the heroes and villains battling each other for the Infinity Gems. The final boss is Thanos, who steals whatever Gems the player had collected (at that point, all but the sixth gem, Mind) and uses them against the player, but with each gem having a strange, new effect when used by Thanos.
Marvel Super Heroes is a fighting game in which superheroes and villains from the Marvel Universe fight against each other.
Gameplay to its predecessor, X-Men: Children of the Atom, but with a more simplified use of the super meter, and the addition of the Infinity Gems. Each Gem can be activated in battle, giving the user a different power for a few seconds. In addition, each character has a Gem that they have a special affinity for, and will get additional abilities whenever they activate it.
The Infinity Gems are; Power, Time, Space, Reality, Soul and Mind. These gems can be earned by obtaining them from opponents during arcade mode, or by fulfilling certain criteria during versus mode, such as getting the first hit. By using these gems in battle, fighters receive enhanced effects for a short amount of time, such as increased power or defense, health recovery or additional attacks. Certain fighters will receive extra benefits whilst using certain gems. For example, if Spider-Man uses the Power Gem, he can create a doppelganger on the opposite side of his opponent for extra damage during his attacks.
The game features 10 playable characters:
Hulk is a superhero from the Marvel Comics. He is a scientist who was exposed to extreme amounts of gamma radiation, altering his DNA and transforming him to a giant green monster.
Wolverine real name James Howlett or commonly Logan, is a character from the X-Men series by Marvel. He is a mutant with animal-keen senses, retractable Adamantium claws, and a powerful regenerative ability.
Spider-Man real name Peter Benjamin Parker, is a superhero from the Marvel Comics. He was bitten by a radioactive spider, and gained superhuman abilities akin to a spider such as agility and keen senses. With his brilliance at physical science, he has also invented a web-shooter to aid in his crime-fighting activities.
Magneto born Max Eisenhardt, later known as Erik Magnus Lensherr, is a character from the X-Men series by Marvel. He is a mutant with a powerful ability to control all forms of magnetism.
Juggernaut real name Cain Marko, is a character from the X-Men series by Marvel. He is a mutate, a former human empowered by the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak, granting him nigh limitless strength, invulnerability, and force resistance.
Iron Man real name Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark, is a superhero from the Marvel Comics. He is a genius inventor and CEO of Stark Industries. He built an advanced armored suit, capable of firing photon blasts and serving as his heart replacement.
Psylocke real name Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock, is a character from the X-Men series by Marvel. She is a mutant who can psionically manipulate and control the physical aspects of reality, and can manifest her telepathic powers as "psychic blades".
Captain America real name Steven Grant "Steve" Rogers, is superhero from the Marvel Comics. He is an Avenger, and a symbol of a America since the 1940s. He is a super soldier with enhanced physical abilities and durability, and wields a circular Vibranium shield.
Shuma-Gorath is an creature from the Marvel Comics. He is one of the Great Old Ones, beings who walked the Earth and even the universe itself since its conception.
Blackheart In the comics, Blackheart is son of the demon Lord Mephisto. He's clashed with such heroes as Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and Spider-Man. He is the physical embodiment of evil.
If Blackheart activates the Reality Gem, he turns invisible.
On the arcade version of the game, Dr. Doom or Thanos can be chosen via a code at the selection screen. However, if the game is completed with Thanos, Magneto's ending text will be displayed. Artwork unique to this ending suggests that a true ending for him was planned, but not completed.
This game was dedicated to the memory of Jack Kirby, with character artwork based on his old designs.
In the Japanese port of this game, while the Reality Gem is in effect and when you press the Start button, 2 more items will pop out not just the Holloween pumpkin but also the spike ball from Hsien-Ko from Darkstalkers and the trademark item from various Capcom scroll shooting and action games: the Yashichi (a pinwheel-like item that grants score bonus).
