Marvel's Avengers unsurprisingly has a main campaign that follows the Avengers team through a full storyline.
Here are the basics of combat. You have a light attack and a heavy attack, and like most action games these get woven together for combos. To avoid attacks you can dodge. Dodging right before you are hit grants a Perfect Dodge. You can also Parry attacks, and each character does this slightly differently.
Enemies that are blocking need to have their blocks broken. If you fill up the Poise meter under an enemy's health bar you can then perform a takedown.
You'll get an indicator when an incoming attack is about to hit you. Blue and Yellow attacks can be Parried. Red attacks cannot and must be dodged. If you die in a mission, you will be put into a downed state and can be revived by any teammate standing near you for a few seconds.
Now, let's cover the 4 Heroes in the Beta and their playstyles so that you're prepared for launch day.
Starting with The Hulk. Light attacks are wide and sweeping. Heavy attacks are slow but destructive. Hulk's Passive is Rage and it allows him to be an effective tank for the group. Your Rage meter fills when attacking or being attacked.
Hulk's ranged attack is quite slow but powerful as he throws a chunk of cement. Hulk breaks Blocking with a charged up Heavy Attack, a combo finisher, or with ranged attacks.
Overall Hulk plays like a Bruiser or Tank that disrupts enemies through knockbacks and grabs, and by absorbing damage for his team. His Support Ability is a ground and pound that disrupts enemies and has a taunt effect. His Assault Ability is a charge that you can optionally hold and release. Hulk's Ultimate is a mighty Clap that sends enemies flying with strong damage output. And Hulk traverses obstacles by jumping, climbing, and clinging to walls.
Iron Man is methodical. His light attacks are precise melee hits. His Heavy Attacks rely on his Repulsor cannons. Iron Man is a flying character. Which answers traversal for him since he can fly anywhere he wants. You can unlock rockets and lasers which gives him an answer to any encounter.
Overall Iron Man plays like a Specialist. He's malleable and can flex into almost any role your team could need. His Support Ability is an EMP blast that deals damage and stuns enemies. His Assault ability is a channeled beam from his chest that deals ticking damage. His ultimate will have Iron Man dawn the Hulkbuster suit for a short time.
Black Widow is the butt kicker you'd expect her to be. She's quite comfy in the middle of a melee fight with fast hits and high mobility. She can grapple to enemies when she parries, and uses this grapple to move around the environment.
Her Support Ability grants Invisibility to herself and any nearby teammates. Invisibility makes enemies unable to target you. Her Assault Ability shoots an electric device that deals ticking damage and stuns enemies for a short time. Her Ultimate switches out her Tonfas for a Bo staff that will change her light and heavy attacks. Black Widow breaks blocks by vaulting over the enemy and with a small number of other skills.
Ms. Marvel may look small but she is a power house. Her light attacks are great for juggling airborne enemies. Her Heavy Attacks can be mixed in to displace enemies in front of you.
Her Support Ability is an area heal and it can save an entire mission. Her Assault Ability is an enlarged palm strike that sends enemies flying. And her Ultimate Ability refills her Health and enlarges her so she can wreak havok. Like Hulk, Ms. Marvel breaks blocks with a charged up Heavy Attack but she can also vault.
