Marvel's Spider-Man 2 - Game Review
2Sony / Insomniac's 2023 Spider-Man 2 game is guaranteed to blow you away. Some have said it's a "safe" sequel but I would personally disagree considering how many characters are killed off and the fact the story practically spans 2 or 3 games worth of content and major events.
Peter & Miles protect their city together from Sandman and anyone else who would threaten it's safety as equal partners. Harry Osborn returns from his "Trip to Europe" (which is code for bacta tank healing treatment), and is able to survive his ailment due to the symbiote called Venom merging with his body, but he begins to change and show signs of personality alterations. An obsessed hunter named Kraven invades New York in search of the ultimate prey. Miles desires revenge against Mr. Negative for murdering his father.
Spider-Man 2 is a jaw dropping cinematic experience with significantly higher quality in traversal, combat, and boss encounters compared to it's predecessor. It also features a brand new multi pathed skill tree and a ton of new powerful abilities which can be swapped out at your leisure. The game also allows you to switch between the two Spider-Men at your will, offering different activities and stories for both. While I had some issues with the story, it's easy to forgive due to how lengthy and content filled it is; you essentially get a trilogy's worth of story beats and major events in this one game without any one character being left out or forgotten.
Spider-Man 2 does not have many flaws at all so I will be nit picking some smaller things here. I felt it had serious problems in it's "woke" department, as it attempts to re-do the Spanish language in a gender neutral form that is utterly embarrassing and disrespectful. The people behind this game couldn't even be bothered to make sure they got the correct flag for Miles' nationality, as they instead accidentally gave him a Cuban flag instead of a proper Puerto Rican one, and they also had the audacity to remove every single LGBTQ+ representation feature when selling the game is non-progressive countries; implying they don't actually care about the cause and they are more interested in money (Which is obviously the case, but most companies know how to virtue signal more properly than this), the final "woke" issue is what they've done with MJ's character, now I personally don't care about her face being changed because they already did that to Peter and I didn't like it then either, but what is an issue with MJ is their tone deaf decision to have her train with Sable off screen so that she can provide combat sections and be the ultimate "girl boss," even though we already have two, in fact, even more than two superpowered beings to control in epic combat sections already; everyone knows MJ is just a stereotypical wish fulfilment love interest, and the decision to try and make her hold her own in combat sections is illogical and pandering.
Spider-Man 2 is a great game but I had to rant about it's ridiculous virtue signaling problems and how they were so incompetent that they couldn't even get something as simple as that correct. Despite all this though, I still think the game is a fantastic cinematic experience that I would love to keep playing in the future if they make additional games.
