"Five Nights at Freddy’s" (2023) directed by Emma Tammi is the long awaited live action adaption of this iconic franchise. It's not terrible but it's certainly not a must watch unless you are a hardcore fan.

A deadbeat brother named Mike (Josh Hutcherson) accepts a job as a security guard at a shut down pizzeria called Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. The location is unique because it features animatronic robots which interact with the children. The animatronics turn out to be possessed by dead children's spirits and they are being manipulated by a nefarious fifth animatronic behind the scenes. Mike tries to keep custody over his sister Abby (Piper Rubio) despite his lackluster life.

Five Nights at Freddy's (FNaF), straight up, is only worth your time if you have played through the first and second game as well as Security Breach. There is an unexpected character appearance in Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) and players of the newer game Security Breach will get a lot more value from her if you have that pre existing context. While we never really leave the office in the main games, the sets do seem accurate and faithful; and the animatronics look decent enough for what they are. Honestly the best thing about this film is the fact that it's not "Willy's Wonderland" (2021), so take that as you will.

Mike was an extremely lame protagonist and he borderline killed the movie for me at times. This film desperately needed a higher MPAA rating because it currently has little to no blood or kill value since everything is hidden and cut away before it gets good. While the ghost children stuff is canon, it made for weak surface level plot and I was bored during every one of Mike's flashback scenes where he is trying to get answers about his kidnapped brother. The film can feel very dumbed down at times and I personally would have enjoyed it more if it was taking itself a bit more seriously in terms of quality and content; instead of being the relatively safe child-friendly adaption it turned out to be.

I liked FNaF but it's not something that makes me excited to think about or want to go see it again. The best part was the designs of everything and the worst part was the main character.
