Marvel's Spider-Man 2 - ULTIMATE - No Upgrade, Gadget, Ability - 1: Sandman
NOTE: I had to start this entire run over because, after finishing the final boss of the last run, I realized that if you disable the tutorial you don't have to buy the game's first health upgrade. This essentially invalidated the entire run, so... here we go again.
As always, No Upgrade runs start off slow. At this point in the game, this is essentially just any normal Ultimate Mode run.
This is also a fairly long segment, since this early content is super easy. The segments will get a bit shorter as I go, but I'll be using some video editing to splice some deaths out during the multi-phase boss fights, as I don't have the patience to grind them all for deathless runs again.
At 6:25 I accidentally quit out when trying to do "Skip Cinematic"... usually I'd redo a segment over this sort of mistake, but after having to restart the whole run, I just wanted to get this early stuff over with.
At 12:05, the game robs me of my HP as part of the "Focus Healing" tutorial. But since I'm avoiding Focus right now, and have the tutorial disabled, I'm able to skip this. But then I take a sloppy hit at 13:20, reducing me to a measly 5 HP. This is a pretty dangerous situation, with a lot of enemies left to go. I try to abuse water and ring-outs as much as possible, and manage to make it to the character switch at 14:50.
At 16:05 I have no idea what my life bar is doing. I've seen this happen before. I'm not sure if it's just a graphical bug, or if I'm actually dead, or immortal, or what.
Even though the tutorial is disabled, at 21:50 the game stealth-purchases the first upgrade from the Skill Tree, Spider Whiplash. I don't consider this a true "upgrade", and normally it would be in-bounds for this run. However with that said, I'm only going to use any skills or gadgets where absolutely required, so this move will never be activated and this Skill purchase isn't going to impact the integrity of the run regardless. At 23:20 I'm similarly given the Upshot gadget, but with the tutorial disabled I don't have to purchase the first upgrade for it.
I should also note that when I say "no gadgets" I'm obviously excluding the basic Web Shooter from that restriction. You can nitpick this, but it feels fair to me. Similarly I'm not considering Focus Bar usage an "ability". I'll leave it to someone else to enhance the run to include "No Focus", though I will carry that limitation as far as I can (I believe I make it to the game's first boss before breaking on this).
At 28:30 I encounter the game's first regular Brute enemy. The addition of the Parry mechanic makes these guys far more trivial than they were in the first game, however even without that, carrying over the "abilities" system from Miles Morales would further remove them as an issue. Overall, a No Upgrade Run here just isn't the same as it was in Spider-Man 2018.
Even so, I miss three parries in a row here and nearly get myself killed. One important lesson to learn for Spider-Man 2 is that it's always better to err on the side of "early" for parries, since you take only partial damage for an early parry, but full damage for one that's a frame too late.
