In the "Refusal" ending of Mass Effect 3, Shepard rejects all the options offered by the Starchild, refusing to destroy, control, or synthesize the Reapers, or to accept their terms. This results in the Reapers continuing their cycle of destruction and wiping out nearly all life in the galaxy. The ending is often interpreted as a dark, final act of defiance, where Shepard chooses to die on their own terms rather than accept any of the Starchild's imposed solutions.
