Matt Walsh is EVERYTHING WRONG with Film Reviews
663Sonic the Hedgehog 3 recently surpassed Mufasa at the box office and has maintained a huge cult following. While there have been some negative reviews in the past, this review from Matt Walsh represents everything wrong with not just his Sonic 3 review, but with bad film reviews as a whole.
The reason why Matt Walsh is a terrible reviewer is because his reviewing style shares a lot of common errors of bad faith media criticism. He makes surface-level critiques- and even bold accusations- with little effort to back them up, he fails to properly understand what the film is trying to do, he misconstrues minor nitpicks as major problems, and he acts like he knows more about movies than most people do. That last point, in particular, really got to me because so many bad reviewers act like major influencers when, at best, they're more casual enjoyers. This leads to proper film discussion dominated by people who aren't as passionate about movies as they claim to be, and therefore refuse to properly understand or engage with what a movie wants to be and opt to criticize a film for what they wanted it to be. Matt Walsh, in particular, strikes me as one of the biggest examples of this type of critic, and I believe it's everything wrong with film reviews (the bad ones anyway).
