(MAX DIFFICULTY) "Battle of Asculum" | Rome: Total War Android/iOS
A Pyrrhic victory is a victory that inflicts such a devastating toll on the victor that it is virtually the same as defeat. Someone who wins a Pyrrhic victory has also taken a heavy toll that negates any true sense of achievement or damages long-term progress.
The term reflects a quote from Pyrrhus of Epirus, whose triumph against the Romans in the Battle of Asculum in 279 BC. They destroyed much of his forces, and while a tactical victory, forced the end of his campaign.
The Battle of Asculum took place in 279 BC between the Roman Republic under the command of the consuls Publius Decius Mus and Publius Sulpicius Saverrio, and the forces of King Pyrrhus of Epirus. It all took place during the Pyrrhic War, after the Battle of Heraclea of 280 BC, which was the first battle of the war.
In the spring of 279 BC, Pyrrhus invaded Apulia. Many places were captured or capitulated. The Romans came upon him near Asculum and encamped opposite him. In Plutarch's account, after resting his army, Pyrrhus marched to Asculum to confront the Romans. - Wikipedia
