Did you know?
-The video game is influenced by the classic 1979 film "Mad Max". Max Payne is a policeman, whose wife Michelle and his baby daughter Rose are murdered and his best friend Alex is killed.
-Max Payne kills literally hundreds of people in this game. The total count for the entire game is 662, but one kill is included for a dream sequence. The total number of kills in the actual game is 661.
-This game is set in 2001; with the opening prologue taking place on August 22, 1998.
-Max Payne was modeled after the writer of the game, Sam Lake. Lake also dressed up and played the part of Max Payne for the graphic novel cut scenes that are shown through out the game. Lake's mother portrayed the antagonist, Nicole Horne.
-Level Designer Marty Howe (who joined the project from Australia) is an avid John Woo fan; watching Woo's films and analyzed the timing, pacing, flow and choreography of the action sequences and replicated them in the video game.
-Above the desk, just outside the bedroom in the Payne residence, there is a diploma that says: "The College of Killing".
-Work on the game had been going on for more than 3 years before it was finally released. The first video of game-play was featured at the E3 exhibition in 1998.
-Mad Max (1979), The Punisher (1989), Hard Boiled (1992), Loaded (1995) and The Matrix (1999) are influences behind the game.
-The license plate on Vladimir's car is VODKA.
-The Part II, Chapter II name, "An Offer You Cant Refuse", is a reference to The Godfather (1972).
- A Dreamcast port for the game was cancelled
-Max Payne compares himself to Chow Yun Fat, a recurring protagonist in John Woo films which inspired the gun-play mechanics. Dual wielding, bullet time etc...
