Max Payne is a third—person shooter computer game developed by the Finnish company Remedy Entertainment, produced by 3D Realms and published by Gathering of Developers in 2001. This is the first part in the Max Payne series. In the same year, Max Payne was ported to Xbox and PlayStation 2 game consoles, and in July 2002 — to Macintosh personal computers by MacSoft in North America and by Feral Interactive in the rest of the world. In December 2003, a version for the Game Boy Advance was released. There were also plans to develop a version for the Dreamcast, but the project was canceled due to the cessation of production of the console. The game was re-released on April 29, 2009 as a downloadable game on Xbox Originals through the Xbox 360 program and in the spring of 2012 as a downloadable game on the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3. On April 12, 2012, a version for iOS was released, and on June 14 for Android.

The narrative of the game covers three years in the life of Max Payne, an agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration

The design and script of the game deliberately imitate films in the noir genre, as well as "cool detectives" by authors such as Mickey Spillane. The game contains numerous references to Scandinavian mythology, in particular, Ragnarok. The gameplay in Max Payne was influenced by Hong Kong action movies (Hong Kong action cinema) and primarily films directed by John Wu. In addition, Max Payne is the first game to use the bullet time effect[8].

The Max Payne game received quite high ratings and flattering reviews from the gaming press. Critics noted the exciting gameplay and brilliant presentation of the plot. In addition, the game has received a number of awards , including the BAFTA Award [10]. In 2008, a film of the same name was released — "Max Payne", which was filmed based on the game.
