Mazda Rotary Engine Development Team Begins
Mazda Motor Corporation is stepping up its game by focusing more on the development of rotary engines (RE), aiming to align with contemporary needs and contribute to a carbon-neutral future. The newly formed "RE Development Group" includes 36 engineers tasked with advancing these unique engines. This initiative marks a significant moment for Mazda, as it re-establishes a dedicated team for rotary engines, a move not seen since 2018. The last rotary engine sports car, the RX-8 Spirit R, ceased production in 2012, leaving fans eager for what's next.
Although Mazda has not committed to launching a new rotary sports car, the company's commitment to creating vehicles that resonate with enthusiasts remains strong. At the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2024, Mazda's President and CEO, Katsuhiro Moro, teased the possibility of a car that would follow in the footsteps of the legendary RX-7 and RX-8, stirring excitement among fans.
The discussion around the potential new car clarifies that, if it proceeds, the rotary engine would serve primarily as a generator rather than powering the wheels directly, a departure from its traditional role in Mazda's RX series. The proposed Iconic SP model would feature a two-rotor engine capable of running on gasoline, hydrogen, and renewable fuels, powering a battery that could also be charged via a household outlet.
Boasting 365 horsepower and a weight of 3,197 pounds, evenly distributed across its axles, the Iconic SP aims to offer a dynamic driving experience. The chief designer, Masashi Nakayama, even mentioned the possibility of reducing its size to that of an MX-5 Miata, highlighting Mazda's innovative approach to design and engineering.
If Mazda moves forward with this project, the Iconic SP would become the 13th Mazda car to feature a rotary engine. However, as the development team has only recently been announced, any production version of this exciting coupe is likely a few years from becoming a reality.
