The competitive parts are meant to be parody and not serious.

This video pretty much sums up my experience with playing Mech Assault in 2023. The casual element is pretty great. Meeting new people and doing really stupid crap. There is also a fan patch for MA1 which rebalances things and makes the game overall better. (I do disagree with a few of the changes, but the majority of changes make the game better)

But when the community plays competitively, the game doesn't feel nearly as enjoyable and really reminds me of playing Mech Assault 2 ages ago in a Clan. Effectively playing a game where the majority of gameplay is people wall walking, gauss peeking, and annoying latency based issues. Competitive stuff will always exist, but this isn't how you attract new players. It's just a shame how many people play competitively all the time.

Mech Assault can be great fun, but it desperately needs a modern remake. The net code is so garbage and the mechanics are outdated as hell. Unfortunately if it did get one, it would probably suck because of how modern games are designed. MA2 is still better, but playing it on my 360 is like playing a slideshow so it's not that enjoyable.
