This week we are covering MechWarrior 1 and 2 on The Play Retro Show so I sat down to check out the DOS versions during this live stream. Were there Tech Issues? You bet. As our good friend TondaGossa points out during the stream, Retro Gaming is 87% Tech Troubleshooting.

Mechwarrior 1 & 2 on MiSTerFPGA running DOS 6.22 and possibly Win 3.1x Old School Retro

We used our Single DRAM MiSTerFPGA to fire up a the AO486 Core to emulate a period accurate 286 ~10Mhz PC AT machine.

I was using a 8bitDo C64 Mechanical type keyboard and an 8bitDo NES style mouse on the MisterFPGA.

We eventually switched to our Atari VCS (2019?) running Batocera Build Linux and tried our luck with Libretro DosBox Pure and configured MechWarrior for DOS to run at 286 speeds with CGA and EGA graphics tests.

We were able to figure out the basics of MechWarrior 1 and got a good sampling of gameplay and a bit into the manual and backstory.

Near the end of the stream we ran a few test for MechWarrior 2 and found out that we were in over our head and would have to do a bit more research before tackling MechWarrior 2 and all of it's incarnation. Tune in next!

Thank you,

Brian
