MediaTek Pentonic 1000 SoC: Is the Lack of 4x HDMI 2.1 Port Support the Year’s Biggest TV Let Down?
*AVForums Podcast 13-Feb-2023*
The hopes of four fully specced HDMI 2.1 ports on TVs that use the new MediaTek Pentonic 1000 SoC have been dashed, despite initial reports indicating this would in fact be the case.
We look at what's behind this, including the loosening of the specification criteria for HDMI 2.1, and discuss what this means for the average TV viewer and whether it's mainly gamers who'll feel the brunt of this about-face from MediaTek.
One thing's for sure, LG and Samsung, who've been supplying TVs with four fully operational HDMI 2.1 sockets for a few years now, will be looking to encourage any disgruntled TV enthusiasts over to their own models; leaving the likes of Philips, Panasonic and Sony (and other manufacturers that use MediaTek chips) having to offer improvements elsewhere to attract buyers.
