Mega Man 3 for the NES, released in 1990, is the third entry in Capcom’s iconic action-platformer series. It marks the debut of two key characters: Proto Man (known in Japan as Blues), a mysterious figure who challenges Mega Man throughout the game, and Rush, the versatile mechanical dog who replaces the earlier support items with new abilities like the Rush Coil and Rush Jet. Development faced internal challenges, including the absence of original director Akira Kitamura. With high expectations after the success of Mega Man 2, artist-turned-producer Keiji Inafune later reflected that the game could have been better, despite strong sales.

Graphically, Mega Man 3 continues the vibrant, detailed sprite work the series is known for, and introduces smoother animations and more complex stage designs. The soundtrack, while beloved, came from a new composer, Yasuaki Fujita (Bun Bun), bringing a slightly different tone to the series' music. While energy tanks are more plentiful this time around, the game is still regarded as one of the more difficult entries, with longer levels and complex boss patterns. Despite its troubled development, Mega Man 3 remains a fan favorite and a pivotal moment in the series' evolution.
