Of all the boss medals to collect in ZXA, Vulturon’s are the most infamous due to the tedium involved in collecting them. In particular, the gold medal involves a tremendous amount of lounging around. Here, I’ll showcase how to obtain all 3 medals with an easy-to-replicate strategy.

Getting the silver medal out of the way first. The only requirement is that you land the finishing hit on Vulturon using Model H’s Sonic Boom. As is the case with any medal involving a specific finisher, you’re free to use any offense you wish until the last hit. I stick with Model H to avoid switching mid-fight and because its combos are well-suited to slicing Vulturon apart. This specific battle is half RNG. The first two combos are planned in advance, but after that, you have to hope Vulturon behaves. Moving on.

The bulk of the video—and this description—will be dedicated to the gold and bronze medals, which can be obtained simultaneously owing to the time-consuming nature of the gold medal challenge. Bronze dictates that you survive for over 2 minutes while gold demands that you attack using only Model A’s Giga Crush. Since I’m playing on Expert Mode, the weapon energy recharge rate is quite slow. Playing on lower difficulties will reduce the waiting time, assuming you don’t collect any weapon energy upgrades. Vulturon’s attack pattern will also be easier to deal with, but as you’ll see, it’s not very taxing, even on Expert mode.

The battle can be summarized like this: the entire difficulty of the fight is centered around the Funky Junk (great name) enemies that Vulturon summons. Take them out of the picture, and you’re left with a pattern so basic that it merits little attention. Three of the silly junk bots are given life at the start. Particularly in Expert Mode, these things have a tendency to move and shuffle about oddly, so you want to dust two of them expeditiously. You have to react to the way Vulturon moves to avoid shooting him with a charged shot. If you get lucky, you can stand next to the left wall and fire off 3 shots without needing to wall jump. If Vulturon decides to land in your corner, don’t panic. His hitbox is incongruent with his sprite (what else is new?), so you can jump up and cling to the wall after he lands, then take care of the enemies on your side of the arena after he teleports away.

By leaving one Funky Junk alive, Vulturon will be unable to summon more. Whether this is an oversight or an act of mercy is up for debate, but what isn’t arguable is that the battle becomes a near-mindless affair when sparing one of Vulturon’s metallic cadavers. Sticking to the slopes is your lifeline here. Vulturon’s flight and incessant rock concert will never be able to contact Grey or Ashe if you hang around the lower portion of the slopes. If he lands in your corner, he may try a guitar smack, which you can evade with the mind-bending tactic of walking to the raised center.

That leaves only Vulturon’s debris-launching attack as a potential concern. Or rather, it would be if it weren’t for the fact that a single Model A bullet is capable of piercing the debris like it’s wet paper. As long as you fire a stream of shots toward the speaker on your side of the arena, you’ll never be hit by this attack. For this reason, I decided to play it risky a couple of times by showcasing that there are specific points on the floor where the player can stand and have the debris just barely skim past. I don’t recommend this; it’s a bit precise, but more importantly, it can be inconsistent. There appears to be some variation in the direction of travel for the debris. I’m not totally certain, though. As you can imagine, I didn’t really feel like researching it.

Concerning the metal contraptions on the ceiling, you do need to destroy the center one to avoid being dragged into it whenever Vulturon decides to rock out on the other end of the room. You’re free to leave the ones on the sides intact if you wish; they’re safe to walk/dash under. As far as using Giga Crush goes, take care to avoid letting it loose while Vulturon is teleporting or attracting debris. A total of 7 Giga Crushes are needed to win, so you can afford to miss a few hits, but don’t get reckless. The best time to attack is when Vulturon is flying from one side to the other while not playing guitar. Lastly, after 4 Giga Crushes, it’s highly likely that the off-screen Funky Junk will finally meet its end, so prepare for Vulturon to conjure up some more.

While it’s not as much of a technical challenge as, say, defeating Hedgeshock in Human/Reploid Form, it’s still daunting from the perspective that each failure incurs a very lengthy retry process. Hopefully, by demonstrating this damageless version of the medal challenge, I’m able to help anyone that’s seeking these medals survive the challenge and take a step closer to claiming Model a.
