Ness in Super Smash Bros. has always had major shortcomings in his design. From his introduction in Smash 64, to his most recent iteration in Brawl, Ness has had problems with being sluggish, having poor range, and an infamously awful PK-Thunder (Up-B). Project M has addressed these concerns with a slew of buffs, enabling him to compete with Melee's best and the rest of the re-worked cast.

Ness has his Double-Jump Cancel from Melee and 64, and it is now optional. If you wish to do a Double-Jump Cancel, let go of the jump button before you do an aerial. If you wish to do a rising aerial, hold the jump button while inputting the aerial. Ness can now choose to Double-Jump Cancel or do a rising aerial allowing him to better defend himself when recovering, and chase people in ways that he couldn't before, adding variety to the combo and pressure options that Double-Jump Cancelling originally gave him.

A bit of information about Project M:

"Project M is a community-made mod of Brawl inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee's gameplay designed to add rich, technical gameplay to a balanced cast of characters while additionally enhancing the speed of play. Project M employs new codes which seamlessly add in new, universal features to the entire cast to add technical variety to all characters.
Project M is playable on ANY NTSC Wii, without any hardware modification, and even without any longterm software modification. All that is needed to get started is an SD card and a copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl."
