FPS games are part of a genre that has always had the ability to stay fresh and relevant for several decades; something that cannot be said for other types of games. Even Doom, one of the most authentic sagas, is still one of the most exciting shooters to play today. But what if we add a twist to the formula to offer something new? Well, this is the proposal made by Metal: Hellsinger.

Metal: Hellsinger is a rhythm game mixed with FPS features and designed around the classic formula of different arenas in succession, where countless enemies await us that we will have to defeat in order to progress. What happens here is that we have a very important factor, which is music.

The idea is to shoot, reload, dodge, execute... to the rhythm of the music. Around our sight we can see indicators that set the pace and, if we execute the relevant action at the right time, we will increase our streak of correct notes. When the multiplier reaches x16, the song's vocal track is activated, which features top artists.

A very simple modification completely changes the way you play. In fact, it will take a while for your brain to adapt since we always tend to shoot as soon as we have the enemy within range, and not through musical instructions. This exciting change involves strategy skills, having to dodge attacks, position ourselves on the map, or use a weapon. Not only does the music have different rhythms, but also different recharge times and purposes. For example, a weaker melody helps us to keep the streak going. We can use it between arenas or when we do not have any enemies nearby.

Everything is designed on a whim, making the game very addictive even if we don't care about the scores... Something difficult since the leaderboards appear as soon as we finish a level. Finally, in terms of gameplay, it should be noted that each main scenario has three challenges that, in turn, have three objectives and that, if we complete them, we will unlock improvements for our protagonist.

One of the most interesting aspects of Metal: Hellsinger is, undoubtedly, the soundtrack. It features vocalists such as Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Matt Heafy (Trivium), Mikael Stanne (The Halo Effect, with members from the bands Dark Tranquillity, and In Flames), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Björn Strid (Soilwork) and Tatiana Shmailyuk (Jinjer), hence the reward for reaching and maintaining the x16 multiplier is killing demons to the rhythm of their voices. If you are one who enjoys metal all year round and not just when a new Doom game comes out, you are going to enjoy Metal: Hellsinger even more.

In addition to the music, which is fantastic, the sound is complemented by what seems to be the only two voice actors available in the industry, Troy Baker and Jennifer Hale.

The first contact with Metal: Hellsinger will melt your brain, since it has much more depth than it may seem. But when you learn to play well, you will have a great time. It is a mix made with great talent and offers a seemingly simple and very addictive design that you are going to very much enjoy. Give it a chance and don't get frustrated if you don't get the hang of it the first time, because Metal: Hellsinger hides so much amusement as soon as the rhythm starts running through your veins.
