Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge – Chapter 8 – Gameplay No Commentary – IDC Plays
1We must say that it's hard to live up to the memory of a 40-year-old, but Tribute Games has surprised everyone with their work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. They've been able to take a legendary beat 'em-up saga and bring it up to date with great skill.
One of the very few downsides to the game is the characters’ playability. There is no uniqueness to how each character is controlled. They are all the same, although we are able to reach new levels and unlock new special attacks and improvements in the character's statistics.
Even though, there are no great differences in the playability, visually, each character is different. It would have been very easy to reuse the Turtles' sprites to save work and trace movements against each other, but the team knew that this was not the way to go. The visual difference between each of the turtles is palpable in each of their movements. It has many similar aspects to the 90s television series and pays homage to legendary fighting games and beat 'em-ups. Each Sprite shows great taste and, although it may seem that the variety of enemies is not very large, its creators have not hesitated to draw on the deepest lore of the Ninja Turtles to rescue some interesting surprises.
Speaking of the latter, it is necessary to say that the bosses of each level shine with their own light with magnificent animation and a more comic characterization than what we saw on television more than 30 years ago that suits them wonderfully.
When talking of playability, this beat'em-up game is about being agile, rather than forceful: with fast movements, aerial combo, and combined attacks of the players. The story mode might not seem like much of a challenge, since it resets lives on each level. The enemies aren't tough enough to put you in a real bind throughout its 16 levels, but if you're looking for something epic, feel free to try arcade mode: no “continues”, and no “reset of lives”.
The soundtrack is inevitably reminiscent of the good times of Konami and other entertainment companies of the same genre. Each song is brilliant and chosen with good sense.
We should also highlight the animation work of the heroes and villains, as well as their settings and the details of the HUD or the mapping, which pays homage to the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from NES. Everywhere you look in Shredder's Revenge there is a fondness for the Ninja Turtles and the beat'em-up genre.
There was a time when Ninja Turtles games were counted as hits no matter what platform they were released on. Nobody could have imagined that in 2022, a Montreal team would continue expanding such a legend. Happy memories and nostalgia are great feelings, this is why working to materialize and refine these feelings through an epic video game, is a sure winner.
