Metroid is the first metroidvania?
Is Metroid, released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System in 1986 and in 1988 for the Nintendo 8-bit, the first Metroidvania? It's certainly one of the most famous NES retro games, but pinpointing the exact birth of the Metroidvania genre isn't easy. Some argue that the term "Metroidvania" only began to be used specifically after the release of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in 1997. In fact, the term "Metroidvania" was actually a portmanteau of the games Metroid and Castlevania.
Metroid's protagonist is Samus Aran, a heroine who returns to a desolate planet, among the ruins of an alien race that raised her after her parents disappeared. Her goal is to investigate the tests being conducted on a particular life form, called Metroids, and prevent dangerous space pirates from taking advantage of these experiments. The meticulously crafted level design (along with the Power-Ups) remains the true highlight of the entire Metroid series.
In this episode of Video Games to Remember, we also discover the creators behind this gem of gaming history.
