Remastered Review: This is how a remaster should be done. Very little in terms of the game has changed apart from some minor tweaks to item pickups and a few other details only hardcore fans will notice. The developers in charge of the remaster knew they didn't have to make monumental changes because Retro Studios was damn near perfect the first time.

The game looks and feels great running at a crisp 60 FPS. The controls have been updated to fit a modern gamer's needs, but the old controls are still there if you prefer it. That said, I found moving around and exploring to be more intuitive with a modern control scheme. My only minor fault with the remaster is some of the button mapping is a little awkward with modern controls, particularly when it comes to switching beams and using skills such as boost and spider ball. It all works and makes sense, but it can be a little awkward in spots.

You can't go wrong with either version of Prime. The original was the best Gamecube title by a country mile and the best game of the 2000s. This remaster is a wonderful tribute and is a must-play for any Switch owner.

Original Prime Review: This game shouldn’t have worked and didn’t look like it would even late in the process. All previews indicated this would be a tonal mess of a game by Retro Studios, a rookie company, that would make Nintendo and the series’ creator, the late Gunpei Yokoi, look bad. And yet, by some small miracle, it all came together. Metroid Prime, instead, is a near-perfect achievement in game design and gameplay. The two elements meld together and create an absorbing experience that meshes first- and third-person gameplay to help the gamer feel like they are Samus Aran.

The story is mostly in the background, but the bare bones of it involve Samus investigating a space pirate operation on Tallon IV and learning they are using Phazon to make themselves more powerful and dangerous than ever. They also are using a create called Metroid Prime to experiment and develop new weapons that could overwhelm galactic civilization. There’s a lot more to it in the form of Chozo and pirate logs, but they are not required to enjoy the game on its own. There is a lot of thought and care put into the backstory and it is intriguing to learn more about what is happening behind the scenes.

The game itself is well-paced as you go through several different areas on the planet and unlock more weapons and abilities that will be familiar to fans of the series. Missiles get less emphasis this time around with the beams taking a greater role. Samus is also given more freedom to move and strafe and the lock-on feature works quite well. The items are doled at a pretty solid pace and their locations are very clever, forcing the gamer to take their time and really explore the world around them. The game does offer hints from time to time, but it isn’t going to spoon-feed the answers, either.

The visuals are solid and the enemy designs are very strong with Meta Ridley and Metroid Prime, in particular, being standouts. The art design is also very good, mixing different atmospheres and environments throughout Tallon IV. The music is more modern than past Metroid games, but the classic themes are still woven in and it helps create a sense of unease and tension.

Metroid Prime is not only the best Gamecube game, but it ranks as one of the greatest games of all time. Nearly everything in this title works to perfection and is a must-play not only for Nintendo fans, but gaming fans in general. It is a remarkable piece of gameplay and game design.
