Mewtwo - Melee Event 51 The Showdown (No stock loss)
Mewtwo is certainly far from being the worst character in The Showdown, but on the whole he's maybe only very slightly better here than he is in competitive play. The big thing Mewtwo has going for him is he can evade getting cornered and maneuver around the stage with ease. Along with that, Mewtwo's neutral aerial is really damn amazing here, and can deal nice damage to Giga Bowser, while having enough base knockback to knock him far enough away even at 0%. That's about where the good ends for Mewtwo though. While nair is amazing here, his other aerials leave much to desire; fair deals nice knockback and damage while being able to setup combos at low damage and killing at high damage, but its reach is far too short to be able to safely attack Giga Bowser with when he's active; dair is a meteor smash, which is always useful on Giga Bowser, but it won't start popping him up until around 50% despite how slow it is, and like fair it also has reach issues that can easily cause an active Giga Bowser to hit or trade with you; bair is only useful as a poke when retreating, its base knockback is otherwise way too low to safely attack Giga Bowser; uair is pretty much useless outside of tagging on a quick juggle hit when you can't land fair for whatever reason. This leaves Mewtwo heavily reliant on nair as his means of safely assaulting on Giga Bowser, especially when Giga Bowser is under 50%.
For other problems Mewtwo has, he has a difficult time KOing Giga Bowser under 150%. He can't grab him, he has a hard time landing his forward and down smash on Giga Bowser while Giga Bowser can live both to 150%, you won't get much time to charge Shadow Ball, and fair doesn't kill grounded Giga Bowser until 150%. As such, Giga Bowser will usually live to over 150% without the aid of items. Mewtwo has a bit of a saving grace here, as dair to fair is still a true combo on Giga Bowser at kill percent as long as he doesn't DI the dair left/right, so once Giga Bowser does approach 150% he won't live for much longer. The other big problem Mewtwo has is his shit survivability; while Mewtwo can evade well, his large size ensures he'll take a ton of damage when he is caught, and then he dies to a stiff breeze, especially to vertical blows. Ganon's Gerudo Dragon will kill Mewtwo under 120%, and Giga Bowser's Bowser Bomb and up smash will also start killing Mewtwo around 100%, when these attacks aren't much danger to most other characters. So once Mewtwo passes 100%, he is in extreme danger of dying.
When it comes to the 2 on 1 part, it doesn't get much better for Mewtwo, as nair is no longer so effective (and puts Mewtwo at great risk to get Dark Dived). The big problem here is when Ganon and opposing Mewtwo are bunch together, player Mewtwo has no safe means of attacking them; his attacks either have too short of reach, or are too weak to attack with (and of course you can't safely grab and throw when the opponent's partner is nearby). Mewtwo's saving grace here is that he can easily jump over them and evade them all day long, pelting them with Shadow Balls, until favorable items appear (plus Mewtwo can kill much easier now, as he can use his throws on them, can edge-guard more effectively, can land smashes easier, fairs kills much earlier, and can charge Shadow Ball more). Because of this, and the fact I was over 150% and would get easily killed by any Ganon attack, I play extremely safe once I kill Giga Bowser and get to the 2 on 1.
