Ok I figured I'd just drop some information for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate thats a decade too late. If anyone wanted to know what bowguns to use and how the progression looks, here you go.

This is not a "Best Builds" video, and there are definitely other options for post game weapons and armor, but these are what I felt are the easiest to craft and progress with to get through the game.

*EDIT* I have been provided Relevant Bowgun Information from the Japanese TA Wiki site. Here are the ammo corrections:

Elemental IS standardized to 45 Elemental value and 1 hit for all elemental types ( I figured as much).
Pierce1 - 9 MV x 3 hits
Pierce2 - 8 MV x 4 hits
Pierce3 - 8 MV x 5 hits.

Slightly different, pierce is weird. but yeah small changes
