In the fall of 2017, Shilov’s crew returned to the Khmeimim airbase. The Syrian Army continued to advance in the regions around Palmyra after the recapture of the city. By late May 2017, all roads linking Damascus with Palmyra came under the control of the Syrian government. As part of an offensive to clear out both the rebels and ISIL from the southern portion of the Syrian desert, half a dozen fronts were opened by the Army, including south and east of Palmyra.
On June 9, government forces advanced eastward and set up positions around 40 miles northeast of al-Tanf, thus reaching and securing a part of the Syrian-Iraqi border. In August, the Free Syrian Army announced its intention to continue the war against government forces.
In October, a large-scale operation in central Syria was successfully completed. Its goal was to capture the strategic oil town of Al-Sukhnah and besiege and capture 11,000 square kilometers of ISIL territory in central Syria, after which the Syrian Army would advance towards Deir ez-Zor and lift the three-year ISIL siege of the government's enclave in the city. Afterwards, the Syrian Army advanced towards the Islamic State's then-capital, Mayadin.
Wrath of the Euphrates: the SDF military operation, launched in November 2016 against ISIS, was successfully completed at the end of October 2017. The main goal was achieved: the isolation and capture of the ISIS capital city of Al-Raqqa. The SDF's subsidiary goals included capturing the Tabqa Dam, the nearby city of Al-Tabqa, and the Baath Dam further downstream. On June 1, the Syrian Arab Army, led by the Tiger Forces, began an offensive on ISIL positions in the western countryside of Raqqa, south of the town of Maskanah, which it recently captured, toward the Ithriya-Tabqa highway, aiming to secure its main supply route to Aleppo. In July, the SAA captured the Wahab, al-Fahd, Dbaysan, al-Qseer, Abu al-Qatat, and Abu Qatash oil fields south of Resafa.
On June 24, the SDF completely besieged Raqqa city, trapping about 4,000 ISIL militants in the city.
On December 6, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces stated that most of the territory of Syria had been liberated from terrorists and all major ISIS gangs had been destroyed.
