Mickey Mouse may not be as popular as he was, and Mickey's Wild Adventure may be that reason. The PS1 re-release of SNES's Mickey Mania, a 2D platformer that looks great, but is more cruel than making someone watch Legally Blonde 2 sober. A childhood game I still own, but one I never beat before. Confused as to why, I decided to do a playthrough of this PS1 misery on Twitch convinced it was merely my childhood reflexes that held me back from completing this evil video game. Instead, what I faced was over 5 hours of endless save state reloading, deaths to fireballs beyond my reach, falling planks of wood, weird crossbow dog firing knights and an England based medieval King that uses ninja stars as a weapon.

From towers falling from under you, to flames rising up to instant cook Mickey Mouse, to hit boxes so large that ducking will mean game over, and of course, the lack of any real save system in the game, Mickey's Wild Adventure / Mickey Mania is Walt Disney's message from the grave that no matter where his soul rests today, he is still watching, planning new ways to run lives. But still, not as a bad as Mulan is on the eyes. Direct to DVD looking trash.

Mickey's Wild Adventure is a very hard game, mostly because of how unfair it is. While the lack of a save system hurts, it wasn't uncommon during the era of the original SNES version, Mickey Mania released. What makes this game unfair is how awkward it feels at times, not unplayable, but has some qualities to it that stick out. I mentioned the hit boxes, and they may be the biggest issue. Losing a life due to Mickey Mouse's finger tips touching a trap while the rest of his body is 3 feet away can result in a return to the main menu and starting the entire game over. It is a testament to my child self's power of will i've long lost that I was capable of making it so far into this game, but regardless of my abilities back then, it doesn't make the game any less super duper meanie.

It's not a terrible game at all, it's pretty fun. Beautiful artwork that calls back to older, paper painted and drawn Disney movies before the era of digital art and computers took over and made anime and western animated movies look stale and flat (funny considering i'm talking about a video game here). Along with the great art, colours and style, the soundtrack is rather nice. I love Steamboat Mickey's starting stages OST, and some later stages are tracks that you can chill to, perhaps even find yourself in the mood for an older Disney film afterwards. There's a lot of good happening in Mickey's Wild Adventure, it's just the core aspect of what makes a game go from decent to great is lacking.

The Playstation 1 and SNES both have a long list of classic titles that outshine Mickey Mouse's video game, but I would still recommend this title for everyone to give a chance to. More so if you're a streamer and you want to have a fun challenge with your community on seeing how badly this game can break you. Though certainly not as difficulty as some older titles like Aladdin and Ghouls 'n Ghosts, its less polished design is what will get that game over screen more than the intended difficulty by the game developers.

As for me, this playthrough was beautiful. I had a blast playing through the entire game in one sitting, even once it got to a point where I was too tired to step two feet without walking through a trap, needing to save state reload, and there is a lot of that. A painfully fun adventure i'm glad I experienced that made my viewers laugh and gave them something to pass the time to.

The last boss is strange, awful, way too funny, and in the end a good final send of. I praise Mickey's Wild Adventure for the way it makes me laugh and scream in moments that should be cute, enjoyable, or easy going. Met with dread and the ever looming main menu return, the stress felt through this playthrough gave memories i'll hold onto for a long time.

I continue to play through Playstation 1 games, while also exploring NES and SNES titles, and I still manage to find new titles that give me something to look back on and smile. While Mickey's Wild Adventure has many issues, making me laugh isn't one of them. Please enjoy my walkthrough and be sure to try this PS1 platfomer from the dark realm yourself. But be ready to face demons you thought you'd never encounter.
