microStudio is an easy to use and learn free and open source online game engine ideal for beginners. Until recently it was also online only, so if you didn't like browser based software, you were out of luck. Well now there are standalone offline versions for Linux, Mac and Windows users. Additionally MicroScript 2.0 and other features were added.
