Midnight Resistance is a classic side-scrolling run and gun game that was originally released in arcades in 1989 by Data East. It was later ported to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1990. The game is set in a dystopian future where the player controls a member of a resistance movement on a mission to rescue his kidnapped family from a drug kingpin known as King Crimson.
In the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version, the main character is Johnny Ford, a member of an operative group tasked with shutting down drug cartels in South America. After completing his last mission, Johnny returns home to find his family missing and a note from King Crimson, who has kidnapped them due to Johnny’s father’s development of a serum that could cure addictions to narcotics.
The gameplay of “Midnight Resistance” is similar to the Contra series, with the unique feature of a rotatable joystick in the arcade version, allowing players to aim in one of eight directions. The Sega Genesis version adapted the controls to fit the standard gamepad, and it’s noted for its challenging gameplay and excellent soundtrack composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto and Shogo Sakai.
It’s a beloved title among retro gaming enthusiasts for its action-packed gameplay and memorable music.
