Mighty No. 9 (Blind) - Part 12 : Two-Form Trinity (Stream Archive)
Original stream date: June 21st, 2016
Well this one was going to be inevitably long... I mean, I cut out a LOT, but there is only so much that can be cut while still preserving the key learning points and discoveries, SO... I did not want to split the videos between the stage and boss, because the stage actually went really well, so here we go... LONG video!
The stage itself is really not bad... it is only a little longer than average and has a gimmick that is not very deadly. ALL of the trouble came from the boss. A multiple form final boss was expected... a multiple form final boss that starts off with a devil boss form, that features multiple different invincible attacks between both forms, AND randomly only dies after finishing its current attack animation is just DUMB.
This boss sucks... there is nothing more to say about it. Just use the missile at all times since you never really run out, and memorize patterns, that is it. Its difficulty comes from being a gauntlet where messing up at certain points costs you heavily and from the SURPRISE, not dead yet moment at the end.The second form also heavily emphasizes the issue with the Xel absorption mechanic on bosses.
Either way, that is done. Mighty No. 9 is a game I am happy I did not support... because if I was one of the hours worth of names in the credits that support this game, I, too, would probably be pretty mad. Coming into it with no real expectations, though? I had a good time. I mean, I would likely rather go play Mega Man 8 again, but the game is not terrible... just kinda meh. The history of HOW it was made is the thing that is terrible. The gameplay at least remains pretty fast, even if the absorption mechanic is not terribly well executed (all that would need to be done is make it so the enemy is DEFEATED and leaves the Xels there rather than merely stunning them), and I think it would be a more enjoyable experience on a SECOND playthrough. Grab your favourite weapon right away and just... enjoy using it.
Overall... I am happy I picked it up, but I would seriously not recommend it at full price. When it goes on sale for like... half price, go for it, it will at least be an okay time. Not everyone can be Shovel Knight, and not every company knows how to actually keep a full team coordinated and how to polish something properly. Shovel Knight is an example of a unified goal and excellent management leading to a wonderful product, while this is a display of an uncoordinated company with too little experience biting off more than they could chew, and just making a big mess as a result.
I mean, at least we are getting some pretty nice Mega Man fan-games over time, no?
Enjoy!~
