This should be your go to tower in Minecraft pre 1.8 speedrunning in most cases now. There's another tower that's currently being worked on called Devil's Throne (gets arrows in pre 1.8), but I wouldn't recommend it for real use yet as it's not fully optimized and still needs a few improvements. For now, this is the simplest and fastest tower you should use. The reason for the circle of slabs is because when endermen's y level decrease, the game activates their ability to jump (this tech is known as Chaos Vortex). We can manipulate this by making the endermen go up the slab, then down it, triggering their jumping mechanic. This allows them to drop into the tower hole with much less effort than previously needed on towers such as Dark Matter Tower. This video will showcase the tower, how to build it, and some tips and tricks that will help you execute the tower better.
