So this normally happens when you try to connect to a server.
Close minecraft and open up the game again to get to the launcher.

Here you want to select the "Profile" tab, or launch options as they might be called for you.
Enable the "Historical Versions" and make a new profile.

Here you will have to choose a version which is supported by the server you want to join.
I suggest to try out 1.9 and if that does not work then try an earlier version.

Name the profile and save it. Now you can try to join the server again.
