So I've been working a lot lately on tests for puzzles in my adventure map. I've created two puzzles here, both of which could quite easily be applied anywhere.

The first is quite simple and probably could be made smaller, it uses 3 memory latches per side and then if any are on the 4th button does nothing. The sand is just a block detector.

The second has two parts, firstly a configurable 3 state circuit which could very easily be changed to four state. Using the same technique you could add more states. The second part is just two memory latches and then the green piston goes up / chests reveal when you've flipped both latches.
