I conclude my findings with some sad news. Currently you cannot raise the airship while a minecart is sitting on it. You would need to remove the minecart before ascending, making the possibility of raising a full container cart impossible.
** This does not make the idea completely fruitless however as the descending elevator could be used in an adventure map or part of an elaborate rollercoaster :). One could also use the elevator as a raising train bridge..
