I have a MiSTer! Let's try out some PC Engine games. Today we play games for the NEC TurboGrafx-16 / PC Engine, a less well known contemporary of the SNES, Genesis / Mega Drive, and the Amiga. In Japan, the PC Engine was very successful, and was home to a lot of great games. We start out with a great port of classic shooter 'R-Type', which in Japan was split into two cartridges. I complete the first cartridge. Next up is 'The Legendary Axe', a great action adventure with cool music, which I fail by jumping into a ditch due to a controller issue (I have since resolved the issue). After this I play two shooters, the wacky 'Air Zonk', and 'Cyber Core', where you shoot a lot bugs. 'Military Madness' (known as 'Nectaris' in Japan) is a turn-based strategy game. To an Amiga person like me, this is exactly like 'Battle Isle', which is more or less a clone of this game. Finally, I play 'Dungeon Explorer', which is an action RPG that plays like a mix of 'Diablo' and 'Gauntlet'.
The MiSTer is a FPGA-based open source emulation system that emulates a large variety of computers, consoles and arcade games from the 1990s and older.
