He's Axel.
In 2001, Banpresto took to their first handheld Super Robot Taisen entry in a while, Super Robot Wars Advance for the Game Boy Advance. This one functioned much like its other mainline bretheren; you take control of one Axel Almer or Lamia Loveless, whose meant to be on a mission of deadly subterfuge to destroy the famed Londo Bell from within, but circumstances have forced their hand to see what being good feels like. Along the way they meet a cast of assorted mates from other robot anime entries, from golden oldies to Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, and Gundam, to more newer entries at the time like Martian Successor Nadesico. It's a fun, harmless time and you get to learn about the origin of two major players of Original Generation 2. It was also at the time where the series' now well-known smooth battle animations hadn't caught on to the handheld side yet.
Fast forward 7 years later. The Alpha series has proven to be a huge hit and the fans went bonkers over the well-done PS2 remakes of OG1 and 2, due to their now friendlier mechanics and gorgeous animations taking off. A smart aleck within Bandai Namco realized "hey, Advance's roster is full of titles we've given new life to on the PS2! You know with Axel and Lamia's story retold and us having all these assets from other games lying around..."
Here's A Portable, a PSP remake of Advance filled to the brim with redone music, updated mechanics, and of course, animations for the cast that have been either ported over or redone entirely from other PS2 entries. It's also much more difficult! To the point where most within the fanbase consider beating this game a badge of honor. It also just received an absolutely stellar English translation by Team Steel Soul, and they put a lot of love into the dialogue to make this mountain of pressure much more bearable.
Our story begins by taking control of Axel. Those who are familiar with OG2 should know that Axel's kind of a rude and brash fellow with some anger issues. But what if he was nice?
I can taste victory. It's so close, yet so far away...
