Filmmaking Process
Modeling
The Modeling team translates beautiful concept art from Visual Development Artists into the engaging characters and intricate worlds you see on the screen. Stepping in at the beginning of the asset pipeline, Modelers work closely with various departments to ensure that each model will meet the demands of storytelling and the technical needs of production.

Look Development
Look Development Artists help build worlds and characters by creating the color, textures, and materials for everything you see in the final rendered images.
Look Development Artists collaborate closely with each other, and also with several other artistic and technical teams in conjunction with Visual Development.

Rigging
One of the ways that Character Technical Directors support every film is through Rigging. To create the expressive, dynamic characters seen in the final film, Riggers partner with our Animators and Modelers to build controls in models that can be animated in a variety of ways.

Simulation
Simulation Artists author simulation setups that are used for creating highly stylized and art-directed cloth, hair, fur and muscle motion for characters in our films.
Using a suite of advanced physically-based simulation systems where physics primarily controls the motion of cloth and hair as they respond to the way a character moves, simulation setups enable the other creative teams to control the characters’ performances with a fine degree of custom detail.

Layout & Final Layout
Layout is a central component of the storytelling process. Working from storyboards, Layout Artists use a film’s characters, sets, props and cameras to stage, block, and shoot the film, shot by shot.

Animation
Animators breathe life into the performances, creating entertaining and emotionally-driven characters with a variety of believable personalities.
Bringing our Characters to Life
Animators use the principles of great character animation such as timing, clear staging, squash and stretch, anticipation, follow-through, and secondary action to make our characters feel alive.
From subtle and broad movements, to moments of hilarity and deep emotion, our Animators use their strong knowledge of anatomy, weight, movement, and appeal to craft a performance.

Technical Animation & Character Effects
Technical Animators tailor costumes and attend to highly stylized hairdos with a suite of advanced physical simulation systems. This step enables the other creative teams to control the characters’ performances with a fine degree of detail.

Set Extension
Interpreting art direction from the Director, Set Extension Artists enhance storytelling by creating complex digital backgrounds, landscapes, and environments using a range of digital tools involving painting and rendering programs.

Effects Animation
Effects Animators dream up magic by bringing to life the elements of fire, water, wind and earth, which in some cases can become exciting characters themselves.

Crowds Animation
Crowds Artists, collaborating with Animators, apply creative and technical skills to create great looking crowds, using simulation techniques to populate large numbers of characters, animals, and vehicles that deliver compelling performances.

Lighting
Creating effects like reflective surfaces, glowing elements, and dramatic rays, Lighting Artists are an integral part of our storytelling process, using their keen eye to manipulate color and light to emphasize shifts of tone, mood and atmosphere, both subtle and dynamic.

Stereo
The goal of the Stereo team is to enhance the story by drawing audiences further into an immersive experience. They begin by thoughtfully crafting their stereo cameras early in production, using the best depth and volume choices in order to captivate yet maximize 3D viewing comfort for the audience.
