MOANA | Heihei and Pua Shot Progression #shorts
88These were probably my favorite shots to animate on Moana, and there’s a story that goes with them.
So they were originally boarded by @ryangreenart and one of things I loved about it was how pua poked his head in at the end to react to Heihei puking the rock up. However in editorial/layout review it was decided that since they would be sitting on the ground and not on a platform, we would have to lose that reaction and subsequently lose Pua entirely from the shot.
I wasn’t too happy about it, especially since Pua had already been cut so much from the film. So I took a risk and just put him in the shots anyway 😬, and animated him as an innocent awkward observer. I showed it to Ron and John, who loved it, and it remains as one of only 2 moments you see Pua and Heihei on screen together (the last shots of the movie being the other).
I was pleased we got to have at least one moment of chemistry between the two, and I think ultimately Pua’s reaction helps sell Heihei’s absurdity by contrast. It also helps that we had JUST had a preview screening and one of the notes was a resounding MORE PUA PLEASE. I did my best 😁.
