Ha ha ha... if you thought Mobile Light Force made XS Games somewhat infamous, it was only a sign of things to come. Consider this: In North America, Mobile Light Force and MLF2 were released on the same day for two different systems and revolve around two completely different game series but were marketed chronoligically as if it's a proper sequel to the previous game. The only things they have in common is that they were both butchered quite a bit and have the audacity to share nearly the same Charlie's Angel-esque packing in the U.S. Say wha?

If you watched our Mobile Light Force video, you may have learned that it was a watered-down version of "Gunbird", a nice but short anime-style shooter. Mobile Light Force 2 is a watered-down version of a game series known as "Castle Shikigami" or "Shikigami no Shiro". To be slightly fair here, the original Castle Shikigami (this) was nothing to write home about even if it was localized properly, but it's still the victim of poor localization with generally all the in-game story removed.

Subsequent games in the CS/SnS series are significantly better. XS Games even released the follow-up to this as Castle Shikigami 2, but labeled the special attacks as "Mobile Light Force 3 Attacks", as if implying that it's the third game in the "MLF" series... wooooow. How do I know these things? I've become a curious "fan" of XS games and seek to see how they've butchered certain games, so I own a few of them.

MLF2 is basically Castle Shikigami without all the fluff (story) and without options like TATE to expand the screen. However, if the visuals are as bland and blurry as they are when scaled down, I'm almost afraid to see what it would look like in TATE fashion. This is perhaps one of the poorest games visually that you can find for the PS2 and could have been released for the PS1 with a few minor tweaks. The audio is unremarkable, but the spoken (redubbed) English quips from bosses and the like sound terrible and are perhaps unintentionally hilarious.

The game is short even by shooter standards and the gameplay presents almost nothing new, though this is not one of the game's problems. You can play as a nice variety of different characters including the mysterious sexless being from Alfa System's "Elemental Gearbolt" (Known as ???? here and considered a female in the manual, but known as Tagami in EG) and power-up weapons by grabbing coins. The game isn't impossibly difficult, so to get the most out of this game, you'll want to bask in the game's "Hi-Tension" system, which further empowers characters who are particularly close to danger like bullets and rewards more coins to power-up faster. This feature will appeal more to shooter vets than casual shooter fans.

This is a short video showing the first level and the demo that explains the game's mechanics. If you positively must have another budget shooter, I'd pick this up. Enjoy.
