Wireless networks employing the IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol have become pervasive. This talk will introduce fundamentals of the MAC`s random access protocol. We will give an overview of mathematical modelling of the basic 802.11 MAC and the 802.11e (Quality of Service) extended MAC. Infrastructure mode and mesh networks will be discussed. A number of well known, and less well known, issues relating to both MACs will arise in illustrative examples.
