Solitaire, also known as Patience in many parts of the world, is a classic card game that can be played by a single player. The most well-known version of Solitaire is Klondike, but there are numerous variations. The game is typically played with a standard 52-card deck, and the objective is to move all cards to four foundation piles, organized by suit and in ascending order from Ace to King.
The game begins with the player dealing the cards into seven tableau columns, with the number of cards in each column increasing from one to seven. Only the top card of each tableau column is face-up, while the rest are face-down. The remaining cards form the stockpile. The player can draw from the stockpile to supplement the tableau.
In the tableau, cards can be moved according to specific rules: only the top face-up card of each column can be moved, and cards must be arranged in descending order and alternating colors. For example, a red Queen can be placed on a black King. If a face-down card is exposed by moving the top card, it is turned face-up. Only a King can be moved to an empty tableau column.
The foundation piles are built up by suit from Ace to King. The player can move cards from the tableau to the foundation piles as soon as they become available. The game continues until all cards are moved to the foundation piles, or there are no more valid moves available.
Solitaire gained immense popularity with the advent of personal computers, particularly with the inclusion of the game in early versions of Microsoft Windows. This digital version introduced millions to the game and solidified its place as a staple of casual gaming.
