Activision’s Call of Duty is now better at making Battlefield games than EA. This is Call of Duty vs Battlefield. Modern Warfare 2’s Ground War mode is basically the closest any Call of Duty game’s ever come to matching the large-scale carnage we’re used to seeing from a typical game of conquest in Battlefield, a gamemode that’s been the main part of every game since Battlefield 1942 came out way back in 2002.

And when you take into account that the latest release from DICE and EA was not only a fundamentally flawed and terrible game in practically every possible way, I’m talking of course about Battlefield 2042, but it was also the least like any other Battlefield game we’ve seen so far that lacked almost everything that made the previous Battlefield games so great, and it doesn’t take a genius to spot the worrying trend between 2 of the oldest rivals in gaming history.

Since time began, you’ve either been a Battlefield fan or a Call of duty fan. That’s just how it is. You might play both, but we all have a favourite when it’s time to pick sides. For me it’s always been Battlefield. I played Battlefield 1942 back when we used to write with quills and chalk, and all there was to do was play outside until you fell over and scraped all the skin off your knees before going home and playing Pokemon Red on your Gameboy Color. Ah those were the days…

That was in 2002, with Call of Duty 1 coming out about a year later, and since then the 2 franchises have kept each other on their toes and forced each another to try new things for fear of falling behind the competition.

Nowadays though it sort of feels like Battlefield has given up. Almost like they’re ready to throw in the towel, whereas Call of Duty, although basically just releasing a copy and pasted version of the same game year in and year out, they’re still able to demonstrate that they’re willing to step outside their comfort zone and try something new, but without any real challenge from Battlefield, my concern is that we’ll eventually end up losing everything that made both franchises great to begin with.

What I’m talking about is Modern Warfare 2’s improved Ground War mode which now supports 64 players per server on relatively large, well designed maps that leads to intense and surprisingly satisfying house to house infantry combat, combined with the utter carnage that ensues from letting everyone zoom around in helo’s and armoured vehicles, and honestly with the new improved weapon handling and a satisfying time to kill, the whole thing is actually pretty fun to play.

My point is that not only is Call of Duty putting more time and resources into their franchise in a genuine effort to make it a better game with more ways to play, like the new free to play loot based extraction shooter called DMZ, and a sequel to the wildly popular Battle Royale game Warzone that Battlefield has tried and failed twice to beat with Firestorm and Hazard Zone, but they’re also showing that they’re still witty enough to capitalize on the lack of competition from Battlefield which just seems to be getting worse with every release.

Now Call of Duty has stepped into the ring practically unopposed and shown that they might actually be just as good at making conquest games as Battlefield, and it makes how the suits over at DICE are planning on fighting back.

Honestly ever since Battlefield 1 I feel like they’ve completely lost their way and no longer have any idea what made the original games so good.

That’s a bad trend, not only because of the very real risk of EA pulling the plug on the entire Battlefield franchise once it becomes unprofitable for them just like they did with Medal of Honor, Command & Conquer and no doubt the next Dirt Rally game once they fuck it up like they have with SO many huge brands in the past, but also because it means we have to face the truth that Battlefield is now SO bad that it’s actually making Call of Duty look good, and as a Battlefield fan, that’s just not acceptable.

Honestly I think the best thing DICE could do at this point is get out of whatever hellish contract they signed with EA and go back to having a normal developer publisher relationship, but that’s never gonna happen, so we just have to hope that when the next Battlefield game drops, they’ll actually go back to their roots and rediscover why the franchise took off in the first place.

And devs if you’re watching this and you’re out of ideas, just do a fucking remaster of Bad Company 2 and enjoy the profits. Easy.
