So the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 open beta just ended and for the most part it was pretty much everything you’d expect from a COD game.

Small maps, a repetitive gameplay loop and half the server running around bunny hopping and dolphin diving round every corner, while trying to convince themselves that their pre order was money well spent (it wasn’t).

But putting the copy/paste gameplay aside for a moment, Modern Warfare 2 does actually have some redeeming features, most notably the improved weapon handling that’s actually made the gunplay quite a bit slower and it actually feels pretty solid, though accuracy at medium to long ranges is still a bit hit and miss if you’ll excuse the pun.

In the previous games I’ve always thought the guns felt a bit weightless but overall I’ve gotta say they’ve improved a lot. It feels like they’ve got more weight to them and you get the impression that aiming your weapon at someone is actually a threat you can deliver on, much closer to how the weapons felt in Battlefield 3 and 4 than any of the previous Call of Duty games, and honestly depending on how much loot box crap they decide to put into the DMZ mode, it might actually turn out to be a pretty solid shooter.

I feel like the accuracy on smg’s and assault rifles was nerfed to hell at anything higher than 20 meters in favour of keeping sniper rifles relevant though, and the weapon recoil on every gun is mostly made up random vibrations and screen shake for cinematic effect, rather than giving the player any useable feedback to help counter it.

Then there’s the upcoming DMZ mode which will be a PvEvP extraction based game mode similar to other games like Hunt Showdown and Escape from Tarkov, that’s gonna be released as a separate free to play version of the game launching alongside Warzone 2.0.

They haven’t said a whole lot about DMZ just yet but we do know it’s gonna be set on a fairly big map called Al Mazrah and, just like Tarkov and Team 17’s upcoming extraction shooter Marauders, players are gonna be tasked with completing missions, looting everything you can and extracting successfully, while trying not to die to enemy players or AI.

The gameplay loop will likely follow the trend of other extraction based shooters which involves gearing out your character and accepting a couple of missions, dropping into the world at a random location, locating your objective, taking out any enemy AI and any players you meet along the way, before finally exiting the map in one piece at set extraction zones across the map.

It’s a proven model that works, and it’s pretty exciting to see companies with a lot more resources entering the FPS extraction space, because it’s the type of game mode that favours a more tactical and hardcore approach with a clear risk vs reward system in place, rather than rewarding players for sliding, bunny hopping and using Cronus Zen to improve their aim.

Their new AI isn’t all that bad either. I mean they’re not gonna test your skills in the same way as trying to beat a boss in Dark Souls, but they seem responsive enough in the new Invasion game mode that mixes players and AI together in 40 player matches, and they’re way better than whatever Battlefield 2042 tried to do with theirs so I can’t complain.

And although I’m not typically a fan of Call of Duty and I think Activision is one of the worst companies in gaming second only to EA, and it’s got easily one of the most toxic communities in all of gaming, where snap backs are pretty much mandatory and everyone’s out to prove how tough they are, I do feel like the new weapon mechanics paired with the successful extraction based model could be a recipe for success.

But on the other hand seeing as though we are talking about a AAA game company here, it’s equally as likely they’ll design a fairly mediocre and completely over-hyped side game with most of the development money spent on promotion, and then just fill it with the cash printer known as lootboxes that rewards players for the size of their bank account instead of skill, rather than actually trying to create a product that sells because it’s genuinely good.

Either way I’m tentatively optimistic about DMZ, but the reality is that when you’ve been gaming as long as I have, I’ve been burned so many times before that trust in these AAA studios is pretty much non-existent, so I’m not going to be buying into the hype until I play it for myself and see if it’s actually worth my time, and I’ll be sure to keep you guys updated.
