Pressing A+C and Start at the main menu brings you to a hidden 4 player mode. Here we used the Team Player multitap. Fun fact:

Sony paid Midway 12 million dollars to ensure that the 32-bit version would be exclusive to PS1 for ~6months, which means the 16-bit Genesis version was able to come out on time and went on to be a Top 10 seller for the console. Sega Saturn ended up getting UMK3 instead of MK3 though once that shady deal expired, while PS1 never got UMK3 at all.
