I played the SNES version growing up and I thought, despite the no blood, that it was a very good version. I was attracted to the graphics and "maturity" of how it sounded and looked. I was also a fan of the SNES controller as it felt natural and was what I was used to. So I never played the Genesis version and when I saw it in action, I felt pretty disgusted at what I was looking at. I was also not, at the time, a fan of how the Genesis version sounded. I thought the audio was super harsh and it lacked all of the iconic sound effects. So while I heard it was so great because of the blood, nothing about the game looked or sounded like a finished port. It looked terrible.

Removed from childhood, I've come to appreciate the Genesis' sound capabilities. Synth was something I can appreciate now, especially hearing it side by side the arcade version. It certainly played much better. It was faster and more responsive. It still lacked all of the polish, though, and while the Sega CD version looked to address that, it destroyed its playability by having loading screens and gameplay freezes during handicap matches. So while it brought something to the table, it was an automatic failure.

But the Genesis was truly capable of much more. The Sega CD version really felt unnecessary when you thought about it. It's almost conspiracy feeling to think that maybe Sega deliberately nerfed their Genesis port JUST enough to give the Sega CD a chance to bring the definitive version home only to just fail at the job.

Enter the Arcade Edition. This is exactly what the Genesis version could have been. Some changes are subtle, but seeing them side by side will help shine a light on what it did. Color representation is far better. The playing field, something that put all the action on the very bottom of the screen, has been tweaked to bring the characters to the center. It sounds incredible and is second only to the original arcade version. I'm just so happy to see a home port have all of the sound effects and voice samples. So much went into this and Genesis fans have something to be proud of here. This should instantly replace every copy of MK out there.

You can get it here, because I certainly didn't make this:
