Motorhome Breakdown - Six Days in the Shop
Motorhome Breakdown - Six Days in the Shop

We were lucky! Lucky as in the fact that we only spent six days in the repair shop. Lucky that we could get the necessary parts. Lucky that we landed at a good repair shop who took good care of us. Lucky that there was lots to do in the area. Lucky that we were able to tweak and resume our travel plans with minimal disruption. We were lucky and we are thankful. Yes, we've read the repair horror stories on the forums. Thankfully, ours is not one. However, there is always something to learn from every experience. Here are some tips if you find yourself broke down and waiting for repairs.
1. Check the cancellation or modification policies on upcoming reservations. Make sure any adjustments are made to minimize added fees. Pay attention to these policies when booking. Some private campgrounds have very strict cancellation policies. I make it a practice to avoid these RV parks for the simple reason that things come up and I choose not to forfeit any more money than I have to. In our case here, we were dealing with an Army Corps of Engineers park and a state park. I just had to keep track of the adjustments I was making.
2. Keep enough fuel on board for emergencies. We run with a half to full tank to avoid being stuck with low fuel or find ourselves needing to run the generator which requires over a quarter of a tank of fuel to operate.
3. Always keep some water in your fresh water tank. We knew we were being towed so we filled ours. However, a break down or delay can occur anywhere and a little extra water on board is helpful if you are stranded.
4. Watch your thinking. I am a big believer in where the thinking goes, the energy flows. Keep positive and upbeat expecting all to be well. Breath through those times when you are frustrated. A breakdown is a frustrating event but how you manage your emotions during this time can mean the difference between the wait time being miserable and further frustrating or tolerable and even enjoyable. Ok, well that might be a stretch but we did find a silver lining in exploring Bowling Green.
5. This too shall pass. This breakdown, while a little traumatic at the time, is now a mere memory. Our travels have continued and looking back, it was simply a little road bump along the way.
We hope you never experience a breakdown. If you do, we hope that all is repaired and you are back on the road with minimal disruption to your plans. Happy travels to all!
