The mouse filtering (m_filter "1") option, which originated on the original Quake (1996) engine, in action on Half-Life (1998). It serves to smooth the mouse movements of low-resolution mice, thus preventing jerkiness caused by sensor inaccuracies. The tradeoff here is the loss of pixel-perfect accuracy for movement smoothness, as movements have to be filtered, and thus not representing exactly the user's movements on the screen.
