Mozart - Requiem in D minor, VIII. Lacrimosa (Pokémon MD2 Soundfont)
As requested by ackotac, here's a rendition of Mozart's Lacrimosa with a Pokémon soundfont.
Roughly meaning "tearful" in Latin, the Lacrimosa is the biggest expression of grief in the entire Requiem and is probably its most famous excerpt as well. Its allegedly being the movement that Mozart died in the middle of composing most likely added to its mysticism and popularity as well, but very rarely had Mozart ever been so mournful, right from the unnervingly empty-sounding strings from its opening.
The Lacrimosa as we know it today was, along with the rest of the Requiem, completed by Franz Xaver Süssmayr, one of Mozart's students. It might be quite shocking for some people to find out that Mozart's surviving sketches for this movement only last until 0:53.
Of course, it's been implied that Mozart had left now-lost sketches and explicit directions to Süssmayr for how to continue, but we'll never know how many of those he had to work with or how many he used. In any case, it must be said that he did a remarkable job in completing the movement; the despair and drama are carried to enormous heights, and a gentle and touching clarinet solo halfway through (2:01-2:14) sounds exactly like something Mozart would have composed.
Unfortunately, Süssmayr slightly disappoints right at the end by abruptly finishing the piece with an Amen cadence (3:07), which is strong-sounding but somewhat forced and generic compared to the emotional weight that preceded it.
There's some evidence that Mozart had intended there to be a fugue based on the word "Amen" right at this spot, even having left behind a promising sketch, but it seems Süssmayr either ignored it or was somehow unaware of it. Again, we'll probably never know.
For those curious, the sketch for the fugue in question can be found at 22:39-23:02 in this video, which shows all of Mozart's surviving sketches performed in their original forms: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_0wBTkkT7U
