In this episode of 'well I didn't know that' we turn our attention to the Elite Dangerous SRV. In Multiplayer mode there are some restrictions - which I did not know but now make perfect sense. Surface Recon Vehicles (SRV) are ground vehicles used by pilots to traverse planetary surfaces. A middle option between moving On Foot and flying in a ship, SRVs feature storage space for commodities, and allow for close examination of groundside points of interest in relative safety. Ships transport SRVs using Planetary Vehicle Hangars.

An SRV is bought together with a Vehicle Bay also containing the equipment for housing and maintenance. Vehicle Bays can be sold but they can be transferred from a ship to a ship only as the content of a Planetary Vehicle Hangar module and cannot be transferred between hangars. So a new SRV must be bought every time a new Planetary Vehicle Hangar is bought.

Any damage accumulated by an SRV during an excursion is automatically repaired when it boards its mothership. If an SRV is destroyed, its pilot will redeploy aboard their ship and a new vehicle must be bought.

Unlike the ship scanner, the SRV scanner is capable of locking onto small threats such as skimmers and on-foot pilots as well as surface objects such as canisters. In Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, the SRV turret is a viable option for engaging on-foot enemies from afar.
