This is episode 2.5 in our series on music copyright -- the history of the mechanical license. The mechanical license has an interesting history in America, down to a Supreme Court case that music composers actually *lost* regarding whether player piano roll makers needed to pay composers a royalty to do so.

After the loss, the composers did what everyone does whenever they lose a court case, and they lobbied Congress. Congress added terms for "mechanical licenses" in the Copyright Act of 1909.

Though player pianos have gone out of style, mechanical licenses most certainly have not.
