"The battle is truly joy," Octopath Traveler's Olberic announces. But why is he so eager to leap into battle? Why can't he just take a break and sit with himself?
In this cover story, I wanted to take a look at the common JRPG trope of the random battle. Obviously, there is something somewhat artificial about a game play mechanic where moving means danger (and moving quickly often means more danger, as occurs in Octopath Traveler), whereas being still is safety. The very notion of a menu screen is very interesting to me, so I wanted to investigate that idea.
From a character skills perspective, it also makes sense that trader Tressa would want to slow down; she even has skills such as "rest" during the middle of battles.
To contrast, characters like Olberic seems most at ease within battle. As if he is running away from something...
