With 'Hurricane Kick' assist-type Ryu as your 2nd or 3rd character. Simply block any attack, perform a crossover counter and activate X-Factor as Ryu is jumping in.

You can't walk, dash, jump, perform specials or do any supers while in this state. However, you can still do all normals, call assists and Team Hyper Combo.

I don't think the 'Inactivity Timer' has been documented anywhere but it seems to count down when you're stuck in any state that isn't standing or crouching on the ground (I've had it occur during 3 different glitches). It's disappointing for people looking to break the game ;) but it's a really, really good fail-safe for a tournament game like this. Preventing most, possibly game-breaking things from actually breaking the game.

Blocking a single attack when in the float state causes a stuck 'jump' state. Incredibly, this allows Captain America and She-Hulk to do a 1-time air dash. Even though their air-dashes were removed in the final version of MvC3.

If you don't perform any moves, after a while, you will fall out of both 'float' & 'jump' states. Just hitting any attack will reset the previously mentioned 'Inactivity Timer' though and you'll stay in the air.

I'm sure there are 100s of cool glitches and exploits you could do from this set-up. I encourage any like-minded MvC3 geeks to try it out and see what you can come up with.

A video showing the after effects of this glitch surfaced on youtube not long after the game came out with no explanation of the actual cause. It took me a bunch of time to figure it out, try to expand upon it and generally work out what was happening and why. Hopefully it is fun, useful or entertaining for your eyes.
